Job Summary
The Director of Operations provides complete strategic oversight for the daily facility operations management at the Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium (“SMA”). This critical role manages a facility footprint that includes a 3,244-seat theater and a lower-level 2,000-capacity, 13,000 sq ft Exhibit Hall ("The Hall"). The Director of Operations ensures that both large-scale ticketed concerts, theater productions, dance competitions, trade shows, banquets and other events run smoothly, safely, and efficiently.
Key Responsibilities
- Dual-Venue Logistics: Coordinate simultaneous or back-to-back event scheduling, stage and exhibit hall setups across the main 3,244-seat theater and the lower-level Exhibit Hall.
- Facility Maintenance: Lead the dedicated maintenance and housekeeping crews to oversee the upkeep, groundskeeping, routine repairs and cleaning for public spaces, restrooms, and backstage areas.
- Financial Oversight: Administer and monitor an operations budget, optimizing vendor contract proposals, supplier costs, and facility expenses. Oversees all energy management systems and life safety systems.
- Systems Administration: Utilize venue management software, specifically VenueOps and Maintain X, to manage work orders, logistics, and multi-department communication.
- Safety & Security Compliance: Adheres to local fire codes and life safety guidelines
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Facilities Management, Theater Administration, Business Management, or a related field. Experience may be considered as a substitute for post secondary degrees.
- Experience: Minimum of three years managing facilities or operations for a medium-to-large multi-purpose public assembly theater and/or exhibit hall. Related experience will be considered for candidates with experience in facility management industry with specific experience in construction, building maintenance and engineering.
- Technical Mastery: Proven proficiency with specialized industry software like VenueOps and work-order tracking databases such as MaintainX..
- Leadership Prowess: Clear track record of hiring, training, and building positive relationships with crew members and irregular event shifts.
- Hours of work and typical work day: Manage and coordinate physical setups under strict time limits, and work irregular shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays. Events at SMA are typically on weekends and are largely seasonal in nature with the slowest event months in the summer. Candidates are expected to work long and irregular hours during the busy season.
Compensation and benefits:
Salary range: $70,000-$78,000 depending on qualifications and experience. SMA has an extensive benefit program including PTO, health insurance and a 401k plan.
